Why Permata

What makes our approach different.

Reading-led, not lecture-led

We believe the most durable financial knowledge comes from reading carefully, not listening to presentations. Every programme centres on selected texts chosen for their clarity and depth.

Paced for a working household

Sessions are scheduled fortnightly or weekly, with enough space between them for the material to settle. There is no requirement to absorb everything at once.

Singapore-specific content

Our programmes address CPF, Singapore Savings Bonds, the SRS and the Retirement Sum Scheme — topics that matter to Singapore residents and are not covered well by internationally authored books.

Experienced facilitators

Our lead reader spent thirty years in regional banking before turning to financial education. Questions are welcomed; no background knowledge is assumed or required.

No product sales, no commissions

Permata earns its income from programme fees alone. We do not sell financial products, accept referral commissions, or partner with fund managers. The curriculum is free of commercial interest.

Small groups, real discussion

Each cohort is kept small so that participants can ask questions and discuss their own situations. This is not a webinar; it is a reading group with structure and purpose.

Common Questions

Things people usually ask before joining.

Do I need any financial background to join the Reading Companion?
No. The Reading Companion is designed for adults who feel they have not had a proper introduction to investing. If you have never bought a unit trust, or if you have simply never found the time to read carefully about the subject, the programme begins at a comfortable starting point. Those who have some experience are also welcome — the curated texts tend to offer something new regardless of starting position.
Are the sessions held in person or online?
Video sessions are conducted online via a simple video link sent ahead of each session. The reading materials are sent digitally. Occasional in-person gatherings at our Telok Ayer office are arranged for those who prefer to meet the group, though attendance is entirely optional.
How much time does each programme require each week?
The Reading Companion asks for roughly two to three hours of reading per week, plus one optional ninety-minute video session. The Household Finance Programme involves a ninety-minute session weekly and some reading between sessions. The Slow Portfolio Workshop uses fortnightly sessions with reading in between — most participants find two to four hours between sessions is enough to engage properly with the material.
Will Permata recommend specific investments or funds?
No. Permata is an education provider, not a financial adviser. Our programmes help you understand how different instruments work, what questions to ask, and how to think about your own situation — but we do not tell you what to buy or sell. If you require regulated financial advice, we are happy to point you toward the appropriate channels in Singapore.
What is the payment process and is there a refund policy?
Payment is made by bank transfer upon enrolment confirmation. We offer a full refund if you withdraw before the first session. After the programme has begun, a partial refund may be arranged at our discretion based on what remains of the programme. Full details are provided in the enrolment agreement.
Can I join if I have already started investing on my own?
Yes. Many of our participants have existing portfolios they inherited or built informally and have never quite had time to examine carefully. The Slow Portfolio Workshop in particular addresses the challenge of reviewing and managing what you already hold, not only building from the start.
